Plastic Artist

Participated in the National Salons of Fine Arts, the Salon de Abril in the MAM and the National Salons of Modern Art. Assuming that “the degree of reception of an artistic message is proportional to the number of senses used in the reception”, he created works which he called “Integral Art”, by the direct appeal to the five senses, including the palate. It thus employs the different audiovisual and kinetic resources, as well as odors, gustatory elements and tactile possibilities.

Jorge de Freitas Antunes was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1942. He is a composer, poet and artist. He was a pupil of his father, the painter Carlos Antunes, and of Armando Pacheco. As a young man, he attended the Casa Cavalier group, led by Bustamente Sá, Clau Devesa and Eugênio Proença Sigaud.

Its Ambiente I, exhibited at the XV National Salon of Modern Art in 1966, was the forerunner of the category “installation”, which still did not receive this name. It was a cube of 4 meters of edge, in which the public, barefoot, used the sight, the touch, the palate and smell, and also the sound of his electronic music.

Developing an international career as a composer, he was a full professor at the University of Brasilia from 1973 to 2011, when he retired. He never stopped producing works in the areas of plastic arts, participating in various collectives in Rio de Janeiro and Brasília.
